New Year's Day

A selection of photographs taken on the Chinese lunar calendar New Year's day in Shanghai and Beijing. Primarily focused around two temples; Yonghegong in Beijing and Jade Buddha in Shanghai, the images attempt to illustrate the festivities and activities that take place on this particularly devout day for the Chinese population. Crowds flock to the temples and the most fervent of them start queueing from the previous evening to be amongst the first to enter the temples and burn incense to offer wishes for the coming year. As the day progresses many families pay their visits as the mood calms, in Beiijng in recent years the actual practice of lighting incense sticks has been curtailed as people gain more awareness of the contributing factor it can play to the already precarious state of air pollution within the city so a great deal many instead choose to impart the prayers with unlit sticks.
